The children's festival

About

‘It is my sincere wish to communicate music to young people and inspire them. The children’s festival has established itself very well, and the concerts and workshops became fixed dates in the calendars of families in the cities of Salzburg, Mühldorf and Traunreut (Bavaria). Last year we also brought our programs to Zell am See, Linz and even Vienna. This expansion was a great success and proves our investments for music education to be worth it,’ says the founder, artistic director and conductor Elisabeth Fuchs.

The children's festival introduces kids and teenagers to the exciting world of classical music. The children and their families experience enchanting concerts and staging, carefully selected artists and soloists, an entire symphonic orchestra on stage, and many interactive elements that integrate the audience.

Formats

Family concerts take 60 minutes and are designed for kids from 3 to 10 years. Every concert’s story is performed and explained by 1-2 actors. In operas the children see additional 2-4 singers, and in ballet productions additional 1-2 dancers. Visitors will only witness works which are played in the original line-up and by an entire symphony orchestra on stage. During a family concert’s weekend, more than 3.000 kids and adults can enjoy classical music together.

Young audience up from 10 years can see the established and pretty cool Teenie concerts which durate 60-75 minutes. Also, the conductor Elisabeth Fuchs provides the students with interesting background information on the work, composer and the time it was created, appropriate to their age.

Every year in June, young students from 3 to 12 years can participate in the children’s festival week in cooperation with the Salzburg Airport Amadeus terminal 2. These interactive workshop concerts are designed for school classes and kindergarten groups only. The program also expanded to Zell am See where young students can attend concert workshops since 2016/17.

Mission & Vision

Every concert is an extraordinary event and enables the young audience to experience great music in a playfull way – always at a high artistic and educational level! In cooperation with the Salzburg Philharmonic, the children’s festival performs about 70 education-concerts (each with 500 visitors), over 320 workshops (each with 25 kids), and spreads about 17.000 free CDs to young visitors of Sergei Prokofjew’s ‘Peter and the Wolf’ performed by the Salzburg Philharmonic orchestra.

Great music for young listeners. The children’s festival was founded in 2007 by the Austrian conductor Elisabeth Fuchs. Right from the beginning her driving motivation was to provide children an early and age-appropriate access to the world of classical music. Today, the children’s festival is the biggest concert organiser for children, teenagers, and their families in Salzburg. Every year the children’s festival produces six concert cycles and attracts over 25.000 visitors Salzburg city only. During the children’s festival week in Salzburg, the unique workshop-concerts reach more than 7.000 children from all social classes who participate in this unique program. Additionally, the number of subscribers happily grow from 300 in the first year to 2.500 in the last season. This success and rising audience in Salzburg city and in neighbouring Bavaria encouraged us to expand the children’s festival also to Zell am See, Linz and Vienna in the 2016/17 season.
